Qahwaji aims to diversify the sources of military weapons provided to Lebanon within the $500 million quota allocated to the army and as part of the one billion Saudi grant in that regard, As Safir daily reported.
Former Premier and head of al-Mustaqbal Movement MP Saad Hariri announced on August 6 that Saudi Arabia will grant Lebanon one billion dollars to the military institution to “combat terrorism.”
Media information said that $500 million of the grant will be given in cash to the Lebanese army to get the weapons and ammunition needed.
Qahwaji had reiterated to his visitors that Hariri told him to “find the best suitable contract for the military institution, and we will be right behind you,” according to As Safir Wednesday.
It also revealed that the army chief will visit Russia soon after he held several contacts with the Russian Ambassador Alexander Zasypkin in Beirut to sign the arms deal with the leadership of the Russian army.
Qahwaji is expected to visit several western and eastern capitals to purchase the weapons, added the daily, pointing that the U.S. has put its weapons warehouses in Cyprus under the disposal of the Lebanese army since the latest incidents that flared in the northeastern border town of Arsal.
Hariri, who made a surprise visit to Lebanon at the beginning of August after three years abroad, had left back to Jeddah a few days afterwards to “hold discussions with Saudi leaders on the aid granted to the Lebanese army.”
In December 2013 Saudi Arabia had granted three billion dollars for the purchase of arms from France for the benefit of the Lebanese army.

His main concern was how to help the handicapped, for the man himself is disabled.

Dozens of curious people saw the wheelchair that was displayed at last week's World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi. What attracted their attention were neither the seat nor the wheels but the massive panels hanging overhead and overshadowing the chair.

Some of them mistook the wing-like panels for a metal umbrella to be used for protection against the sun. As it turned out, the panel was to draw sunshine and power the machine as it was a solar wheelchair. "I have searched hundreds of websites to check if a solar wheelchair was in use somewhere else but I couldn't find any. This is the first solar wheelchair in the world," said Erabeh, a computer programmer.

"I designed and built this chair myself. I am not thinking about making money or drawing public attention but how to do something for the handicapped people in the UAE. I have tested this chair and it is working perfectly. I have made a trip on this chair from Sharjah to Abu Dhabi and it was a total success."

Erabeh said he had invented the chair in collaboration with the Masdar Technological Institute in Abu Dhabi and is now awaiting funding and sponsorship of the project. He has been involved in negotiations with Masdar and a Japanese company to produce the chair on a commercial basis.

The chair is equipped with four batteries that can keep it moving for six hours under cloudy skies. "Besides helping my fellow citizens, I also wanted to contribute to the UAE's efforts to protect the environment and save energy." Erabeh said he had always wanted to support the disabled in the UAE and thought about a solar wheelchair when he was watching a television programme about solar cars and aircraft. "Then I thought that if they can make cars and planes that are powered by the sun, why can't we make a solar wheelchair that will help the handicapped and at the same time save energy," he said.

"When it becomes available in the market, it will offer tremendous comfort and assistance to crippled people. They will no longer have to wait for hours to charge the batteries as the chair will just roll ahead once it is exposed to the sun. This is a highly feasible machine here as the UAE has clear skies most of the year – perhaps that's why they did not think about one in the West."

Erabeh said thousands of paralysed persons in the country would benefit from his chair once it is in market although he has no figures about their exact number. He said that according to the United Nations, around eight per cent of a country's population is disabled.

"Here in the UAE there is no official or accurate statistics about the number of handicapped people.? We also cannot rely on the UN because only around 20 per cent of the UAE's population are nationals."

Erabeh used the UAE's National Day on December 2 to unveil his solar wheelchair by making a 200-kilometre journey from Sharjah to Abu Dhabi.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9125590254916657630.post-54393846073473150152010-03-29T13:05:00.000-07:002010-03-29T13:06:30.700-07:00ADSB to unveil major naval defence projectsAbu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) will showcase its latest major naval defence projects at the second Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (Dimdex 2010) which opens on Monday.

The three-day defence expo is being held with the support of the Qatar Armed Forces and hosted by the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces. It was the 19th session of the Saudi-Yemeni Coordination Council which took place at the Crown Prince’s Palace.
Addressing the session, the Crown Prince said the council meeting coincided with the meeting of the donors in Riyadh, which was another part of the Kingdom’s efforts to ensure Yemen’s continued development and security.
He expressed his satisfaction at what has been achieved throughout the 35 years of the council’s existence. He stressed the bonds between the two countries including their common faith, good neighborliness and kinship. He stressed that all these commonalities made it important to redouble efforts to promote development in both countries.
He emphasized that one of the major mutual goals is comprehensive security for both countries.
A number of agreements and executive programs were signed at the meeting, including an agreement on cooperation in tourism signed by Prince Sultan Bin Salman Bin Abdul Aziz, Chairman of the General Commission for Tourism and Antiquities and Abdul Hafez Nagi Al-Sama, the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers from the Yemeni side.
Other agreements include: a financial grant agreement of SR150 million for water and sanitary drainage for urban towns; a SR187.5 million deal for the 5th Energy Project in the Republic of Yemen; SR75 million for financing a hospital project in Hudadah and SR18 million grant for equipping workshops and laboratories at the faculties of engineering and education in Taz. This was signed by Dr Ibrahim Al-Assaf, Minister of Finance and Chairman of the Saudi Development Fund and Abdul Kareem Bin Ismail Al-Arhabi, Yemeni Minister of Planning and International Cooperation.
Apart from this, a memo of understanding on health was signed by Dr. Abdullah Abdul Aziz Al-Rabeah, Minister of Health and Noman Taher Al-Sehabi, the Yemeni Minister of Finance.
The Crown Prince expressed his regret at the events that took place in Yemen, which had extended to the Kingdom’s southern borders: “I swear that King Abdullah, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, did not wish for a single drop of blood to be shed… But as the King said the Kingdom will never be lenient with anyone who tampers with the Kingdom’s stability and security.”
Crown Prince Sultan prayed for Allah to protect the two countries’ people from alien destructive thoughts which have nothing to do with Islam. He also prayed for Allah to enlighten and guide them onto the right path, so that they are not used as tools of destruction.
He said the agreements and accords which would be signed at the session included health, education, tourism and social insurance.
He said the council meeting coincided with the meeting of the donors in Riyadh, which was another part of the Kingdom’s efforts to ensure Yemen’s continued development and security.
In his speech, the Yemeni Premier welcomed the Kingdom’s efforts over the last few years to support stability and development. He also stressed the great achievements made within bilateral, economic, commercial, educational, cultural and security agreements.
Mujawwar said: “The size of the economic challenges Yemen has faced over the past five decades is well-known, particularly over the past two years. This is because of socio-economic changes and the emergence of the increasing danger of Al-Qaeda in Yemen and its change [in focus to become] a regional organization threatening security and social peace in the region. This is besides the Houthi rebellion in Sa’da and the rise of calls for secession, which have added more burdens to the country. This has impacted negatively on the investment climate and overall economic growth.”

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9125590254916657630.post-37750051655550820272010-02-28T00:20:00.000-08:002010-02-28T00:21:25.934-08:00Plane repair market in Mideast sees $5bn growthDavid Stewart, partner at UK-based consultancy, Aerostrategy has said that demand by Middle East airlines for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) is expected to increase by 7.6% a year over the next 10 years, bringing the total spend to $4.8bn (Dhs17.6bn) by 2019, Gulf News has reported.

The prediction compares favourably against the global market growth of 3.2%, to total $58.4bn over the same period. When asked if Egypt's government could face protests like those that broke out in Iran, he said he hopes to avoid that but it was ultimately up to the ruling system.

"It is inevitable that change will come to Egypt. What I'm trying to do is pre-empt a point of clash between the government and the people," he said in an interview in the garden of his home on the outskirts of Cairo.

Al Baradei, 67, was coy about whether he plans to run in the 2011 presidential vote, saying that his main focus is on drumming up support for his efforts to promote change and rallying the public as well as fellow opposition leaders behind his campaign.

Existing restrictions make it practically impossible for independents to run, meaning that Al Baradei 's chances are dim without long-sought constitutional amendments. But his supporters see the former Egyptian diplomat as the most credible opposition leader to emerge in a US-allied country ruled for nearly three decades by Mubarak.

Coalition

Al Baradei, who has begun forming a coalition with other opposition leaders, said he plans to launch up a web site to collect signatures from the public with a list of demands to present to the government.

Hassan Nafaa, the coordinator for the new group, said the demands included changing the constitution to enable independents and new party candidates to run in the presidential election and lifting emergency laws that have been in force for nearly three decades. The petition is the first phase, and protests are another option being considered by the group, Nafaa said.

Al Baradei - who won the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize and left his Vienna-based post as director general International Atomic Energy Agency late last year - said he hopes his movement will have a snowball effect.

"There is nothing more powerful than an idea that people believe in... The only power I have is the power of argument, the power of ideas," he said.

Opposition movements have failed to gain momentum in the past as the regime - backed by long-standing emergency laws - frequently jails journalists, pro-reform activists and political opponents.

Established opposition groups also have been weakened by an aging leadership and lack of a popular base.

Supporters hope that Al Baradei, a civilian with international stature and untouched by corruption tainting the Egyptian system, will be able to seize the momentum and build a following to force the government to change.

Since his return, Al Baradei has met various groups at his house. He met with youth representatives who initiated a petition calling on him to run for presidency. Over 100,000 people have joined a Facebook group supporting his candidacy.

He also met with women representatives and the Arab League's Secretary General Amr Mousa at his office, whose name was also floated by reformists looking for a possible rival to Mubarak.

Since taking office in 1981, Mubarak has not named a successor and never had a vice president but he is believed to be grooming his son Jamal to succeed him. It was first observed by US intelligence in 1985. Number in the designation indicates the year it was first observed. This artillery system was produced in quantity.

According to some reports, North Korea has about 200 of these launchers in service. Large numbers of these systems are located north of the demilitarized zone and are targeted towards South Korea. The DPRK has about 500 various long-range artillery systems within range of Seoul. This artillery system has been exported to Iran.

The M1985 has 12 launching tubes for 240-mm unguided spin-stabilized rockets. The type is easily identified by it's two rows of 6 tubes. A standard HE-FRAG warhead weights 90 kg and contains 45 kg of high explosives. Other types of warheads exist, including incendiary, smoke and chemical. It is claimed that maximum range of fire is 43 km. This artillery system can launch one rocket every 4 or 8 seconds.

Four manually-operated stabilizing jacks have to be lowered, prior to the rockets being launched. Elevation and traverse controls are also manually-operated. Vehicle can leaves firing position within 2 minutes.

The M1985 MLRS is based on a Japanese Isuzu 6x6 truck. Hamad Mohammed Thani Al Rumaithi, chief of staff of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) armed forces, arrived in Seoul on Feb. 22 for a four-day visit, the Ministry of National Defense said.

The visit by the UAE military leader comes amid high expectations here that the two countries could resume talks on the sale of the T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic trainer jet, jointly built by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Lockheed Martin.

Last month, it was revealed that the Emirates had reopened talks with KAI on the T-50 after failing to finalize an agreement on the purchase of Italy's M-346 trainer jet.

The UAE selected Alenia Aermacchi last year as the preferred bidder for a $1.4 billion deal to acquire 48 trainers. But the Middle East nation has failed to reach a deal with the Italian company because of "misunderstanding" over trainer specifications, according to an Arabian defense source.

Seoul's defense officials declined to elaborate on the topics to be discussed between Al Rumaithi and South Korean Defense Minister Kim Tae-young Feb. 23.

"Through the bilateral talks, both leaders will discuss a wide range of issues to improve bilateral defense cooperation, such as high-level military exchange visits, military training, cooperation on arms acquisition and support," the ministry said in a news release.

During his stay, the UAE chief of staff is scheduled to visit South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Special Warfare Command in Seoul and the Naval Operations Command in the southern port city of Busan, it said.

Last November, Kim visited the United Arab Emirates to support the country's successful bid to build four nuclear reactors in the Arab nation. Kim met UAE leaders at that time and agreed to bolster their defense cooperation by promising to transfer key arms technologies to the Emirates, according to sources.

The T-50 also is competing with the M-346 for a deal in Singapore to buy 10 to 14 aircraft. Other potential customers include Iraq, Israel, Greece and Poland.

The single-engine T-50 features digital flight controls and a modern, ground-based training system. It is designed to have the maneuverability, endurance and systems to prepare pilots to fly next-generation fighter jets, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, the F-22 Raptor, the Rafale and the F-35 Lightning II.

The jet has a top speed of Mach 1.4 and an operational range of 1,851 kilometers.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
